Why Join Scouting?

Scouting reinforces the skills and values we want our sons to learn while they are having fun

Cub Scouting has nine purposes:

  1. Positively influences character development and encourage spiritual growth
  2. Help boys develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
  3. Encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
  4. Improve understanding within the family
  5. Strengthen boys' ability to get along with other boys and respect other people
  6. Foster a sense of personal achievement by helping boys develop new interests and skills
  7. Show how to be helpful and do one's best
  8. Provide fun and exciting new things to do
  9. Prepare boys to become Boy Scouts

Education
Scouting is designed to promote socially acceptable behavior while arming our young men with the skills and knowledge they need to make wise decisions. Scouts, families and communities are helped through education provided by Scouting on:

  • fighting child abuse and substance abuse
  • environmental stewardship
  • physical and mental health
  • setting and achieving goals
  • citizenship
  • helping others in need, such as fighting hunger through Pack-sponsored efforts
    career preparation and education

Values
Research conducted by Louis Harris & Associates showed that when a random sample of scouts was asked what Scouting had taught them, almost nine out of ten responded with the following:

  • take better care of the environment (89%)
  • get along with others (88%)
  • always give your best effort (87%)
  • have confidence in yourself (87%)
  • set goals for yourself (87%)
  • care for other people (86%)
  • treat other people with respect (86%)

In addition, scouts were found to be more likely to:

  • assume leadership roles in clubs and school organizations
  • put the needs of others before themselves
  • make the most ethical, not necessarily easiest, decisions
  • value education and the environment

Scouting is fun!
FUN is the number one reason to join! You will get to wear a cool uniform, go places and see many new things! You will play sports and games, build things (like race cars and birdhouses), earn and wear achievement badges and have LOTS of FUN!!

For the parents
You will see your son develop skills and attitudes that lead to a well adjusted adult life. Your son will learn the basic skills and values he needs to be a success in society today: he will learn to work as a team player, learn to care for his home and community, learn leadership skills, respect for others and build confidence. There are many good organizations that teach teamwork, skills, etc. However, Scouting's strength is that it is a WELL-ROUNDED program affecting every area of a boy's life.
